"...why isn't this Neely guy a superstar?"

Somehow my Google alerts missed Tucker Stone's nice review of two of my comics.

Nothing against any of the people at MoCCA, but why isn't this Neely guy a superstar? Some of the stuff that you get at MoCCA showcases this amazing level of talent obscured only by youth and inexperience, but Brilliantly Ham-Fisted is only recognizable to me as what's called a "mini-comic" because I'm buying it from Neely himself. Maybe it's because he doesn't have enough out there yet, or maybe it's because not enough people have checked out The Blot--whatever it is, it's always a great opportunity to see a cartoonist jack around with the format and release "23 comic strip poems", all of which are presented in the sort of four panel layouts you might see in a newspaper that had wider margins. Similar in tone to the idea that Yoshihiro Tatsumi described at the PEN World Voices event earlier this year (honest work in gag strip panels dealing with emotion), each of these "poems" is a scattershot attack on moment, dealing out a random Ziggy-like joke before watching a little cartoon man slam his head repeatedly against the panels that contain him. On his way out of frame, a voice calls out "I thought he'd never leave." His response? "That hurt".

I think that's the first time I've been compared to Ziggy.

He also reviews Your Disease Spread Quick. Read the whole article here.

HEY! THERE'S NEW STUFF IN MY STORE!!!

I've just added a few new things to my online store.

You can now order these items direct from me:
Your Disease Spread Quick

Brilliantly Ham-fisted

Skinwalker Letterpress Print

BUT WAIT, THERES MORE:
I've lowered the prices on all of my other prints.

ORDER NOW!

STORES:
Please e-mail me for wholesale orders, or contact Tony Shenton.

AND: I've added a section to the links on the left side of this blog for stores that usually carry my books. More links will be added soon. If you see one of your local stores on the list, please support them. It's tough to run a small business these days, and comic shops are a very special place where awkward young kids can lose themselves in their imaginations and maybe even grow up to be a cartoonist like me!
I'd hate to see any of these portals close up due to this depression.

(If you carry my books, but don't see a link, please let me know)

Please don't kill yourself...

A nice little review of Brilliantly Ham-fisted from Inkstuds. I don't think the book is all that depressing or suicide-inducing, but it's a nice review anyway:

I really like Tom Neely’s work and was happy to get his little collection, Brilliantly Ham-Fisted. It’s a depressingly charming collection of Tom doing his best try at a four panel strip. I somehow doubt that Tom would ever get a daily syndicated strip, unless people felt like killing themselves when they first read the paper in the morning. The work in this is beautiful and full of an odd type of empty life. Tom can seem to exact onto a desperate need to find an end to a loneliness. It doesn’t feel pretentious and full of itself, but instead, the strips are nice poetic contemplation, that slows down the pace nicely. Oh and it doesn’t hurt that Tom is a master cartoonist that is really hitting his stride right now.

I should have these available for sale in my store by the end of the month.

Brilliantly Ham-fisted (New Edition)

NEW! NEW! NEW!

I'm defying the downturn in the economy and it's effects on the comics industry by publishing a new comic book!

This is a collection of my comic strip poems. I previously had xeroxed minis of this book available at SDCC and APE, but this is a new official printing. Plus it has 4 new strips that were previously unavailable. That's 23 comic strip poems + a snazzy new cover for you to enjoy!

It will debut at the Stumptown Comics Festival in Portland, OR, later this month. After that, I will be offering it for sale in my webstore and through select distributors.

Read reviews of the mini-comic version by Geek Magazine, The Daily Cross Hatch, Rob Clough and Sean Collins.

Another great review...

A very nice review of "Your Disease..." and "Brilliantly Ham-fisted" by Brian Heater can be found here.

...fans of Neely’s deservedly lauded book will no doubt be satiated by both books which provided a happy return to Neely’s strange and wonderful universe and a chance to delve even further into the artist’s happily warped psyche.

I've received e-mails asking how to order these books. "Your Disease..." can be ordered through Hydra Head Records here. As for "Brilliantly Ham-fisted," as soon as I make some more of the, I will put them up in my store.

Two Great Reviews!

Comics critic Sean T. Collins reviews my Melvins comic book " Your Disease Spread Quick."

"Tom Neely is working the most fruitful vein of horror-slash-artcomics since Al Columbia."

And he also gives a mostly positive review of my collection of comic strip poems "Brilliantly Ham-fisted."

"...this collection of "19 comic strip poems" ... boasts some very strong work, including among them some of my favorite comics of the year."

I still don't know the release date for the Melvins Boxset, but it should be any day now.
