Busy!!!

I've been really busy lately... I just finished writing a 200 page graphic novel. And now I have a lot of painting to do... I've got a show coming up in September at Black Maria Gallery in L.A. and it will be the inaugural show for my artist collective, Igloo Tornado. More details will be posted soon.

Here's a couple of studies I did for some new pieces.

Don't Pick On Me in Korea

Don't Pick On Me, the music video I animated for The Muffs, is playing in Korea this month at the 10th annual Seoul International Cartoon and Animation Festival. If you're in Korea, go check it out on May 24th-28th. I don't know when my cartoon is playing, but it's part of the "Commissioned Films" category.

A.P.E. was great!

Yes, it was really great. Just what I needed- get out of town (and away from all my troubles), see lots of friends, hang out in one of my favorite cities, and get lots of great new comics.

Here's what I got:

What else... Sold out of all the copies of "tuesday." that I brought with me. Got to hang out with all my cartoonist pals. Met some new people that were cool. The APESH!T art show was really great- I bought a painting by Jeff Roysdon and one by Jesse Reklaw. Got a potential publishing offer that I'll be considering after hearing the Xeric Grant results. Went to Brett Reichman's art opening- which was also really great.

I added some new links to my sidebar: Zak Saly and his publishing front La Mano, Daria Tessler's Animal Sleep Stories website, and Tom Gauld. All of whom should be checked out by everyone. They are great!

Here's a picture Alvin Bueneventura took of me at APE

A.P.E. this weekend!

I'm headin' to me old stompin' ground of San Francisco this week. This weekend is my favorite comic convention of the year: the Alternative Press Exposition this Saturday and Sunday: April 8th & 9th.

Once again, I'll be sharing space with my pals at Global Hobo, purveyors of fine hand-made and hard-to-find comics. We'll be at table #443 on the main floor.

What I'll have with me... The West-Coast debut of my latest comic "tuesday." A 26 page black & white comic about a man terrorized by a mysterious ink blot.

Survival of the Fittest catalogs. 30 page full color book featuring artwork by Renee French, Levon Jihanian, Andy Kehoe, Kathleen Lolley, Tom Neely, Scot Nobles, Lark Pien, Jesse Reklaw, Billy Reynolds, Zack Soto, Gin Stevens, Scott Teplin and Matthew Thurber.

The newly pressed 3rd printing of Henry & Glenn 4-Ever by Igloo Tornado (Igloo Tornado is the artist collective that consists of Me, Levon Jihanian, Gin Stevens, and Scot Nobles). A 16 page black & white comic that presupposes a domestic relationship between Henry Rollins and Glenn Danzig.

Igloo Tornado Gocco Postcards- designed and printed by Levon Jihanian.

Igloo Tornado T-shirts in stylish olive green for boys and hot-pink for the ladies! Designed by Me and Scot Nobles.

And at Josh Frankel and Joe Sayers' nearby table, you will find two hilarious anthology comics featuring work by me: Desert Island Paradise and Only The Lonely.

I will also have some of my older comics with me, and possibly some original art for sale.

Also this week: Brett Reichman, my favorite painting teacher from the San Francisco Art Institute (where I got my MFA), has a show at Paule Anglim opening Thursday, April 6th.

And Friday night- check out some of my friends at this comics-related art show.

So, come out to see me this week at the A.P.E., check out my new comics, and help me mend my broken heart (that's right ladies- I'm single again). I no longer have the easy-to-spot blue hair- just look for the guy with these on his arms:

Just a reminder that Survival of the Fittest is still up at Harmony Gallery through April 17th.

Go there, see it, and buy some art. It's all reasonably priced and it's all really great work. You don't need another pair of designer shoes, you need some art on your walls.

Also- there are iris prints of the "Snigerpus" artwork (pictured above) available for pre-order from the gallery for $150.

I'm in Nickelodeon Magazine!

Nickelodeon Magazine has always had a great comic section that includes gag-strips by some of the best indie-cartoonists out there: Johnny Ryan, Sam Henderson, Kurt Wolfgang, Martin Cendreda, and many many more...

Well- I'm not in the comic section with those guys (though you should check them out, too), but I am on most of the pages of the magazine. If you look at the page numbers you'll see a little mini-strip I drew for them.
It starts with these two dudes on the first page...
Then there is a series of fight-clouds, with the page numbers in the center, scattered throughout the issue...
It all ends with the dudes thoroughly pummelled, but happy with the comic-book split between them. Ahhhhh, sharing- a nice message for the kiddies.

Hopefully I'll get to do more work for them in the future.

Survival of the Fittest: 13 Artists at Harmony Gallery.

"In the struggle for survival, the fittest win out at the expense of their rivals because they succeed in adapting themselves best to their environment."
–Charles Darwin

It’s time for the art world to evolve. Survival of the Fittest is a group show of 13 artists at Harmony Gallery in Hollywood March 6th-April 17th. The purpose of the show is to represent a wide range of new talents and new ideas in the hybrid world of fine art, illustration and comics. The institutional categories of “Illustration”, “Fine Art”, “Low-Brow”, “High-Brow”, and “Cartoon” no longer apply in today’s changing art world. It’s time to abandon this out-dated class system, to break down the barriers as a new breed of Artist is emerging. The 13 artists represented, from different backgrounds, with different purpose, all approach their individual practices with conviction and the serious pursuit of “Art.”

Featuring Art by: Renee French, Levon Jihanian, Andy Kehoe, Kathleen Lolley, Tom Neely, Scot Nobles, Lark Pien, Jesse Reklaw, Billy Reynolds, Zack Soto, Gin Stevens, Scott Teplin and Matthew Thurber.

Tom Neely, Curator

David Jones, Gallery Director

Opening March 10th, 8-10 pm
Harmony Gallery
5911 1/2 Franklin Ave
Hollywood, CA 90028
with Music by D.J. Algonquin

The gallery is also publishing a small press of catalogs for this show.

2 art shows coming up!

Everything But the Kitschen Sync: the 9th annual group show at La Luz de Jesus gallery opens March 3rd. This group show usually features a mixed bag of over 100 artists, and has included me for the last 4 years. It's always a good time. I'm not sure who the other artists are, but previous shows have included the likes of Mark Ryden, Gary Baseman, Mark Todd, Souther Salazar, Gary Taxali, and just about every artist who has ever appeared in Juxtapoz magazine.

Opening March 3rd, 8-11 pm
La Luz de Jesus Gallery
4633 Hollywood Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90027

However... I'm much more excited about Survival of the Fittest: 13 Artists at Harmony Gallery. This is a group show of which I was the curator. It features me and 12 of my favorite artists: Renee French, Levon Jihanian, Andy Kehoe, Kathleen Lolley, Tom Neely, Scot Nobles, Lark Pien, Jesse Reklaw, Billy Reynolds, Zack Soto, Gin Stevens, Scott Teplin and Matthew Thurber. The gallery is also publishing a small press of catalogs for this show.

Opening March 10th, 8-10 pm
Harmony Gallery
5911 1/2 Franklin Ave
Hollywood, CA 90028

I'll post more about these shows soon.

Wrongful appropriation...

A couple of years ago, my friend Greg and I made an anti-Bush political cartoon called "Brother, Can You Spare a Job?". The cartoon was registered and released under the Creative Commons License so that we could allow it to be widely distributed and used by anyone, as long as they abide by the regulations set by Creative Commons: you must attribute credit to the creators, you may NOT use it for commercial purposes, and you may NOT alter, transform, or build upon this work.

Well, The Anime Network have a little promo commercial that compares Cartoons to Anime... Apparently their message is "Cartoons are gay, but Anime is Awesome!". I guess there's no room in their Robots & Babes themed programming for the cartoony goodness of Japanese animators like Osama Tezuka or Hayao Miyazaki.

You can view the commercial here. If you look closely, you'll see two brief sequences that were appropriated from "Brother, Can You Spare a Job?".

Needless to say, we're not happy to be included in the commercial, and it's in clear violation of our Creative Commons License for the cartoon. I assume the "geniuses" who made the commercial scoured Archive.org for what they thought were public-domain cartoons, found "Brother..." and threw it in the mix.

We're not sure what kind of action we'll need to take, but we intend to put an end to their wrongful appropriation of our cartoon.

Greg Saunders has also blogged about this here and here.

Stay Tuned for further developments.

"Brother..." on Channel Frederator

"Brother, Can You Spare a Job?" is the animated short propaganda film that Greg Saunders and I made as a "get out the vote" effort for the 2004 election. Well, we all know how that turned out... a little more than a year later and our country is in terrible shape.

With the 2006 election coming up, "Brother, Can You Spare a Job?" is as timely as ever. The stocks soaring and wages shrinking, who's on the receiving end of this economic recovery we keep hearing about? If things are going so great, then where are all the jobs going? As the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina has shown us, poverty is a problem that's getting worse and worse under the leadership of the Republican Party and their merry band of cronies and thieves. You're doing a heckuva job, Bushie!

Now, with the help of Channel Frederator, we are able to spread our little film to an even bigger audience. Channel Frederator assembles 15 minute episodes of cartoons that are formatted specifically for your iPod (or other digital players). So, whip out your credit card and indulge in this bustling, capitalist society by purchasing an iPod (what were you gonna do with that money- give it to a more worthy cause or something? ). Then go to Channel Frederator and download "Brother, Can You Spare a Job?"! The cartoons are FREE! You can download it from the Channel Frederator episode 14 site, or you can get it through the iTunes store. After you get it, be sure to go back to Channel Frederator, register, and vote for your favorite shorts.

Also, be sure to check out my other cartoon, the Muffs music video "Don't Pick On Me", in Channel Frederator episode 5.

Then be sure to vote in the 2006 election. Sure they'll rig that election, too, and steal all the votes with the help of their privately owned voting machines... But voting is fun, and you get a nice shiny sticker! Then in 2007 Bush will declare himself Emporor and we'll plunge further into despotism... but hey- at least you'll have an iPod with some cool cartoons on it!

2006!

I can't believe it's 2006! It makes me feel old... and that's not helped by the fact that I've let all the dye grow out of my hair and I can now see how grey I've become. I'm like Reed Richards! But Mona likes me grey, so, I guess that's okay...

I don't really make resolutions. But I plan on making this a big year. 2005 was big! Bought a house with my girlfriend, finished The Muffs video, got in American Illustration 24, had four art shows, gave lectures at both of my alma maters, and even did an NPR radio interview. Plus I got to travel around a lot.

In 2006 I've got a lot of projects planned. I hope it's as busy and as successful as 2005... or moreso. I've already got three art shows planned. I've got plans for new comics to write, draw and publish. I'm writing three new stories for animated cartoons. I have lots of yardwork to do in my backyard. And maybe I'll get a puppy!

Happy New Year!
